Module A-S3

Reading & Memory Systems

This module trains learners to extract meaning from text efficiently and to encode it so it can be retrieved under exam conditions. Students practise structured reading methods such as SQ3R, build classical mnemonic systems including the method of loci, and exploit encoding boosters like handwriting and the production effect. By the end, learners can convert any chapter into a durable memory structure in a predictable workflow.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Apply SQ3R to a dense academic chapter and produce usable notes.
2.
Construct method-of-loci and peg-system mnemonics for ordered material.
3.
Chunk complex information into memorable units of 4-7 elements.
4.
Use elaborative encoding to link new facts to existing schemas.
5.
Explain state-dependent and context-dependent memory effects.
6.
Diagnose cue-dependent forgetting and design retrieval cues to prevent it.
7.
Compare handwriting against typing for note-taking retention.
8.
Integrate sleep hygiene into revision planning to consolidate memory.
