Module B-S5

Self-Direction & Motivation

This module gives postgraduate scholars the psychology and practical scaffolding needed to sustain long, under-supervised research projects. Students examine Self-Determination Theory, growth mindset, flow and the emotion-regulation view of procrastination. They then build and test personal systems: implementation intentions, habit loops, tiny starts, commitment devices and progress rituals. By the end learners can diagnose their own motivation collapses, design counter-measures grounded in evidence and defend against burnout across a doctoral timescale.

Learning Outcomes

1.
Contrast intrinsic and extrinsic motivation and recognise crowding-out and overjustification effects.
2.
Apply Self-Determination Theory to redesign tasks for autonomy, competence and relatedness.
3.
Diagnose procrastination as emotion regulation and select evidence-based counter-measures.
4.
Formulate implementation intentions in explicit when-X-then-Y form and evaluate their fit.
5.
Design habit loops with cue, routine, reward and craft tiny-start versions for stalled work.
6.
Select commitment devices proportionate to task value, cost and reversibility.
7.
Distinguish flow conditions from pseudo-flow and tune challenge-skill balance.
8.
Appraise burnout risk using validated indicators and plan recovery and prevention.
